Conversation Starters

‘Tis the season to make sure you’re ready to mix and mingle. Some may quake at the idea of making small talk with friends of friends. You may grimace at the thought of engaging in banter with colleagues you run into on your way out of the toilet stall at work. Never fear, MavenMomma is here with conversation starters to sashay your way through the holiday season.

  • Introduce yourself, ask their name.
  • Give a genuine compliment-keep it to attire as opposed to body/appearance.
  • Ask how they know the host, share how you know & how long you have known.
  • Work? School?
  • Inquire about plans for the rest of the holiday season.
  • Share your last travel destination, ask if they have any ideas for travel.
  • What is their favorite place in the world to visit?
  • Share your New Year's Resolutions, ask for theirs.
  • Looking for a new hobby? Ask for suggestions
  • Make yourself useful-ask if anyone else wants a drink!
  • Ask about any great restaurants they have dined lately.
  • Ask where they live. How long have they lived in that area? Favorite parts of living in the city, town, neighborhood? Least?
  • Comment on recent, uplifting news-stay away from murder and politics too depressing and potentially volatile.
  • Have a pet or children? Do they? Share a funny antidote.
  • Ask about any excellent reads/museum exhibits/podcast etc...
  • Raise a glass to their previous year and the years to come!

One caveat to all of the above conversation starts, it is best to be an active listener.  Try not to listen in order to respond.  One of my east favorite people to speak with are one uppers or people to ask a question to get you to ask them the same question. Be genuine in your interest and questions, as a result conversation will flow.  Need some material for conversation starters.  Check out my list of favorite podcast and TV shows, one of which I am sure will be discuss this season.
